When you are reading, it's important to think about ways in which the characters, problem, or setting might remind you of something else. It might be something else you have read or something you have experienced in your own life. It might even remind you of something happening across the globe! We call these "connections" and they can help us to better understand what we read or help us to remember it!

I am reading a book called Clarice Bean by Lauren Child with my own kids at home.The main character, Clarice, is always worried. In fact, she says, the worst worry is "the worry you never even thought to worry about." Wow! I can relate to that! I've spent many hours and lots of energy worrying about things that may or may not even happen. I've worried about my family, my school work, and even if my library books are overdue!
ReplyDeleteI am reading a book called The Beach House by Jane Green. It is about a group of people who become unlikely friends during a summer in Nantucket. It reminds me of a book I read called Owen and Mzee: The True Story of Remarkable Friendship. Owen, a hippo, and Mzee, a tortoise also become the best of friends (although a very unlikely pair!). ReplyDeleteI have been reading Skittles Riddles Math. It reminds me of math last year. It talks about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. It reminds me of my mom. She is a math teacher at Landstown High School. I see math at home all the time.
I read the book lawn boy by Gary Paulsen. It was a story about a boy who turned cutting grass into a big money making business. It reminds me of when I was in high school, I would do any odd job I could get. I cut grass, fixed flower beds, and helped with chores that some folks had trouble doing. I made a lot of money, but not as much as the lawn boy. Maybe someday...
ReplyDeleteI am reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief with my son. The book has a lot of mythological characters that remind me of the myths that I read back in High School (text-to-text). The character of Poseidon also remind me of the King Neptune statue that I walked past at the oceanfront this weekend (text-to-world.

ReplyDeleteI read Horses and Ponies. This book reminds me of all my responsibilies I have at my horseback riding lessons. I have to hoof pick, curry comb, soft brush, and hard brush my horse. This book has a lot of facts about horses that are useful at my lessons.

ReplyDeleteI am reading The Computer Teacher from the Black Lagoon. It reminds me about the first time I went to the computer lab at Creeds. Mr. B is a much nicer teacher than the teacher in the book.

ReplyDeleteI read a book tonight called The Puppet show. The kids in the school had a puppet show to raise money for the library. The books in the library got wet and needed to be replaced. This reminds me of fundraiser we do at Creeds to help pay for things.
I am reading Junie B. Jones is Captain of Field Day. Well, Junie B wants to be captain of field day but Mrs gave the people in the class a piece of paper and only one of them said captain and that was Junie B. Jones. I can relate, because once I wanted to be the student of the month, but I didn't get it that month. I kept trying and doing my best, and I got it another month, I actually got it the month of my birthday! It was a great birthday gift!
ReplyDeleteI am reading The Air Commandos by Jack David. It is a nonfiction book because it tells about air commandos who's job it is to invade enemy lines. This book reminds me of the Navy Seals book that I read. It reminds me of playing in Tucker's airsoft war and invading their territory.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Twister on Tuesday by Mary Pope Osborne. It is fiction because these two kids go back in time to the 1870s in a magic tree house. They landed in a one room school house on the prairie. It made me think of my grandmother, she went to a one room school house when she was a kid.

ReplyDeleteIm reading Goosebumps Horrorland the series monster blood for breakfast. So far the book is about two kids who do not like the kid next door because he is obnoxious and mean. This reminds of my friend that knew a person that was obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteI am reading HH-60 Pave Hawk Helicopters by Jack David. This book reminds me of playing video games with my brother. The Pave Hawk helicopter main function is to search and rescue injured soldiers. I wish I can fly one of these helicopters one day.
ReplyDeleteI am reading a book called Warriors ,Starlight by Erin Hunter. Its a book about cats in 5 different clans. They each have their own territory and survive by working together. The cats have jobs like hunting, patroling and keeping the clan healthy. It makes me wonder about my own pet cats and if they have jobs and if one of them is the leader.

ReplyDeleteI read the book, Horrible Harry and the Dungeon, by Suzy Kline. In the book, Harry gets put in the Suspension room when he takes the blame for Song Lee's mistake. Sometimes I take the blame for my brother's mistakes and get in trouble just to make him happy.
ReplyDeleteI have read ROGER the Jolly Pirate and Jack Sparrow, The Sword of Cortes, both books are about pirates and battles with other ships. When Roger's boat fought with the Admirals ship it reminded me of when Jacks ship, the Grand Barnacle, fought with the Royal Navy vessel. This is a text to text connection.
ReplyDeleteThe book that I was reading was The Cat in the Hat the Movie. It reminds me of the normal Cat in the Hat book. It also reminded me of a cat and a boy named Josh and a girl named Melanie. I have two brothers and I made a world connection, my friend named Mattie has a sister.

I read Snakes! The author is Lisa Jo Rudy. It reminded me of when we went to The Virginia Living Museum.The museum had a lot of snakes. I also saw a snake skeleton and skin. It was a good book with a lot of pictures.

I read the book called The Worst Kid Who Ever Lived on Eight Avenue by Laurie Lawlor. It is about a boy's dog, named Gasher, that got sick and died in the kennel. It reminds me of my dog, Mocha, who got sick and we had to put him to sleep.

I HAVE READ THE STORY THE PAIN AND THE GREAT ONE. THE BOOK IS ABOUT A GIRL AND HER BROTHER WHO IS A PAIN. IT REMINDED ME OF MY OWN SISTER WHO IS A PAIN. IN THE BOOK THE GIRLS BROTHER PUSHES HER WOODEN BLOCKS DOWN WHEN SHE IS PLAYING WITH THEM. WHAT A PAIN.

ReplyDeleteI read Dewey, There's a Cat in the Library!It's a book about an orange cat who lives in a library. When young kid named Nathen pets Dewey the wrong way, his back will be round. When I pet my cat Smokey the wrong way his back will be round too. Then a litte girl picked Dewey up the wrong way.(It must be Dewey's bad day) My baby brother Matthew picks Smmokey up the wrong way too and I can tell that our cat DOES NOT like it. Dewey did not like what the little kids were doing him. He was happy again when he was able to help a little girl laugh. When Nathan came to pet him Dewey turned around the other way so he could pet him head to too. Then dewey became happy again.

the book I read was called Vets. It is how to be a vet. The book is about what happens in a real vet's clinic. So that has a real world connection.
ReplyDeleteI read the book Junie B. Jones Has a Peep in Her Pocket by Barbara Park. It remindeds me of the time I was afraid of my hermit crab and I didn't want to pick him up. Junie B. Jones was afraid of the rooster at the farm. I now pick up and play with my hermit crab. At the end of the book Junie B. Jones picked up a baby rooster.
ReplyDeleteThe book that I read was Nate the Great and the Snowy Trail, by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. This story reminds me of the time when my Air Hogs helicopter got stuck in a tree. A year later it finally fell out of the tree! I thought it was strange that it took that long for it to fall out!

I went to the dentist and they had x-rays and they had a picture and said, you have a small cavity.Then they said, okay jackson, is your name jackson because you have a brother or sister?My name is Kamden and I have a brother.oh, here are your x-rays,and you don’t have any cavities.so jackson had a cavity but i didn’t.

Goldie socks loved to read.Then the three libearians came home from lunch.The 3bears saw books all over the ground.The bears were frustrated.It reminds me of my sisters big house that holds books.

Ramoaa annoyed Beezus, that reminds me of me and my sister Brandi, because I annoy her. Ramona doesnt want to go anywhere with Beezus, because Ramona cant still Beezus. This book is so exciting to me I hope you read it.

ONE DAY THE LITTLE PENGUIN WANDERED OFF AND NOTICED HE WAS LOOSING ALL HAS FEATHERS AND THOUGHT HE WOULD FREEZE WITHOUT THEM. HE WAS SO SCARED AND SAD. THEN WHEN HE FINALLY FOUND HIS MOM AND DAD. HE GOT SO EXCITED WHEN SHE SAID COME SWIM WITH US HE JUMPED IN THE OCEAN WITHOUT THINKING. HE SAID TO HIS MOM NERVOUSLY WONT I FREEZE WITHOUT MY FEATHERS? THEN HE NOTICED IN HIS REFLECTION THAT HE HAD NEW BEAUTIFUL FEATHERS AND THAT HE LOOKED JUST LIKE HIS DAD AND EMPEROR OF ICE. HE FELT SO PROUD AND EXCITED!!
