Solve It!

Reading Response Question for the Week of November 1-5

The way a character speaks or acts in a story usually gives a lot of information about what kind of person he/she is. We can infer (make a decision based on text evidence) traits or feelings about a character by reading the text and thinking about what we know already. When we put those two things together, we have new information that the author has not told us directly. It’s like using the clues to solve a mystery about the character.

Using a fictional book you are reading at home, what things does your character say or do that give you clues to his/her character? Be sure to tell us the clue from the story as well as what you think the clue tells you as the reader.

  1. In the book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, one of the characters, Mrs. Armstrong, falls and breaks her leg. When the policemen come, she yells, “Call Mr. Armstrong at work! Shut off the stove! Inform the Ladies’ Aid I won’t be at the meeting!” Then the author writes, “even in pain, Mrs. Armstrong could still give orders.” I know that people who give a lot of orders are kind of bossy, so I am inferring that Mrs. Armstrong is a pretty bossy lady!

  3. I read "A Special Day for Mommy," by Dan Andreasen. In this book, I get the feeling that the little is pig is messy, naughty, and thoughtful. I belive she is messy because in the story she makes a lot of messes. For example, she spilled glue all over the floor and left it for her mom to clean up. I think she is naughty because she woke her mom up early on her special day and she picked all the flowers her mom planted. Even though she caused a little trouble she was doing it all to try to make the day special for her mommy.

  4. In Junie B, First Grader Toothless Wonder Junie writes in her journal. She says "Every time I write in this journal I have to look up words in the dumb dictionary. Except sometimes Mr. Scary spells the words on the board for us. And then I have to cross out my mistakes. Plus also, I erase holes in my paper. Spelling is not a breeze I tell you. That is all I feel like writing today. I am done with this thing. And I mean it." After reading this I think Junie B does not like writing in her journal. She has a sassy attitude about having to write in her journal.

  6. I am reading the book Cam Jansen an the Mystery of the Stolen Corn Popper by David A. Adler. In this book one of the characters, Cam Jansen whose real name is Jennifer Jansen has a photographic memory. When Cam needs to remember somthing she says, "click" and she gets a picture in her head. I think Cam is smart because most people that have a photographic memory are smart.

  9. In the Warrior's series, written by Erin Hunter, there are many cats. One medicine cat is named Leafpool. Leafpool's sister is angry and upset with a cat who is the son of a liar and murderer. Leafpool reminds her sister that we go by other's actions, not what we believe to be true or who they are related to. I'm inferring that Leafpool is a helpful, nice, fair and wise cat.

  10. In the book goosebumps horror land there is a kid named Matt and you always have to guess what new thing is going on. the character Matt is the person who gets in most trouble because he is the main character. It doesn't matter if it's not Matt's fault, he always gets in trouble even if someone else did it. The clue is that when he gets in trouble it doesn't tell why Matt hates Bradley.

I'm reading the book called Pirate's Promise by Clyde Robert Bulla. In the first chapter, Big John kicks out his niece and nephew from his house when he finds out they have been living there for three months while he was a sea. This tells me that Big John is mean and doesn't like kids other than his own.

  12. My story is about three kids that found a very rare stamp. They were trust worthy and wanted to make sure the stamp goes to the right person. I felt that the kids were very honest.

  13. In the book, Dr. Brad Has Gone Mad! by Dan Gutman, I think Dr. Brad is a little crazy because of the things that he does. He tries to hypnotize A.J. and tries to make A.J. and Andrea get along. They do not like eachother at all. Dr. Brad also has A.J. do a test with pictures that look like ink splats.

  14. I have read a fictional book called Ramona & Beezus
    By:Beverly Cleary
In the book Ramona & Beezus the character Ramona thinks shes the boss of everything and never listens to any body and always screams and kicks if she doesnt get what she wants. She usually gets what she wants most of the time. I can tell that she is spoiled rotten. She knows that she can get what she wants by throwing a fit.

  18. We read a book in school and it was about a woman who woke up and said "IM HAVING A BABY!!!!! So the dad drove fast and they passed the hospital and went to the ZOO and had the baby. It was really a dark night and they just brought home a baby. But when they got home they noticed some clues that this was not really their baby. First the noticed the green tail, then they noticed a green face and the last thing they noticed green webbed feet. That made me think that the character was some kind of animal from the zoo from these clues. Then they went back to the zoo and got more baby animals until the sister went and got their real human baby that the gorilla mom was taking care of (who though it was her gorilla baby) and the parents were finally happy.

  19. I am reading a book called Handy Hank Will Fix It by Anne Rockwell. The main character is Mr. Hank, who said to one of his customer, " I will have to fetch my plumber's snake". In another part of the book, Mr. Hank says, "There you are, Grandpa Duffy. This window will keep the cold wind outside. " Toward the end of the story, Mr. Hank says, " I have worked so hard that now my shoulder is stiff and it hurts." All of these clue from the story makes me think that Mr. Hank is a hard working man, and he is great at his job.

  20. In the book, "Grandmas At Bat" by Emily Arnold McCully, the main character's coach is out sick with the chicken pox. So his grandmas fill in. At first, they are very bossy and yell a lot. Then when the big game comes, they work together to cheer the team on. Because they changed their attitude for the kids, it shows they really want to help the kids.
