Picture This!

Reading Response Question For The Week Of October 11-15:

Visualizing is “picture-making” in your mind! It can make the words on a page become ferocious fire-breathing beasts on one page or a gentle breeze blowing across a field on another. When the author uses words that are descriptive, we can use our imaginations to create a mental movie that makes us feel like we are actually part of the action!

Think about the book you are reading at home. What words or phrases did you find especially easy to visualize? Which part of the book made the mental pictures come into your mind?

  1. At home, I am reading a book called Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas. In it, people are getting off of a train and the author writes, “they gripped the handrails because the steps were steep and their legs were short, and they frowned and blinked into the white-hot sun.” That part really made me visualize them squinting and coming down off of a high train. Then the author writes, “Most of them were men, dressed in suits, rumpled now, with ties that were loosened, and straw hats.” I felt like I could really see those tired travelers!

  8. At home I'm reading a book called Think Corrie Think. It's by:Jane O' Conner and illustrated by: Laurie Struck Long. Ther are barely any pictures in it. This book makes me videolize(its a word Shannon made up in class) which is were you make a video in your head instead of a picture in your head. The sentence that made me videolize the most is "It was like her tongue got all frozen". That made me videolize Corrie just standing very still trying to think of something to say to Krissy A.. It also made videolize her tongue just sitting ther not moving a tiny little bit. I didn't even see it move an inch or a cm.. Corrie is Spanish, has brown curly hair, brown eyes, brown eyebrows, her hair is down to her shoulders, and she has a strip of hair that is a bang that is just barly touching her eyebrow. Now you know about the part I think is very intresting and very discripted to me.

  10. I read the book Horrible Harry and the Ant Invasion by Suzy Kline. In this book Doug talks about Harry's mother's fudge. He says, "I drooled. I knew how good Harry's mother's fudge was. Chocolate, nutty and Mmmmmmmmmmmmm good." I can just imagine Doug drooling and how good it would taste. There is another sentence where Harry pours ice water down Sidney's back. Sidney screams "Yeoooooow! That's Cold!". I can imagine how Sidney feels. It also reminds me of when my mom threw a cup of cold water down my shirt this summer.

  12. I am reading Mr. Putter & Tabby Make a Wish. One part of the book the author wrote, Mrs. teaberry was carrying an ENORMOUS cake loaded with DOZENS of candles. I think Mr. Putter must be 80 years old with all those candles. Then, in another part it says, it took Mr. Putter, Tabby, Mrs. Teaberry, and Zeke days and days to eat the cake. I can visualize the cake must be 12 inches high and 24 inches wide.

  16. In the book Dark Day in the Deep Sea, a large white bird swooped by Jack and Annie and flew into the woods. It was a seagull. I could picture a seagull flying in the direction of the treehouse and Jack and Annie following it. This was easy to see because I see birds flying in the sky everyday.

  17. I am reading The Fire Within, in the book Liz's mom, Mrs.Penny Kettle is making the visiter, David, a dragon with a pencil and a notebook. The dragon had spiky wings, big flat feet, tiled green scales with turquoise flashes. The characteristic oval-shaped eyes had a gentle, cheery helpful look-but there was deep sensitivity in them, too, as if the creature could weep at the drop of a scale. Can you visualize that to?

  26. The book that I am reading is "The Whisper of Glocken." What really put a picture into my mind was when the author said "By the current... Frowning he turned back to the window, not quite knowing what it was that struck him as odd about the scene. Where the Watercress was wont to flow placidly toward the wide tunnel mouth there was now a great sploshing and foaming of waves." The picture in my mind that it made was all this water swirling around and it was sort of cool how it got stuck into my mind like that.
