Are You Up For A Visualizing Challenge?

Reading Response: Week of October 18, 2010

Many of you last week were able to give some vivid descriptive sentences from what you were reading at home which helped you to visualize. Let’s continue our discussion again this week, but with this challenge…. If you used a fictional book last week, try using a nonfictional text this week. Likewise, if you visualized from a nonfictional text last week, try your hand now at using a fictional text. Have fun! Be sure to include your book’s title, what you visualized, and the text’s descriptive phrases in your blog.

  1. I love learning about the human body and this week I was reading a cool 3-D book called The Human Body by Jonathan Miller. In it, the author explains that “the eye muscles swivel the eyes up and down and left and right.” I immediately thought of how my swivel chair works and imagined by eyes swiveling around to see things around me. Then the author says, “light enters the eye and is focused by the lens to form an upside-down image on the darkened back wall.” That made me “see” the back of my eye like a movie theater with everyone standing on their heads!

This book tells about the fastest, heaviest, smallest, largest, fiercest, and funniest animals. One of the heaviest is the humpback whale. Its as big as a railroad engine! I can visualize this because I have seen a railroad engine before and they are HUGE!

  6. I am reading a book on EARTHQUAKES by Helen J.Challand. One part of the book mentioned mountains can be split in half. Hills and bluffs tumble down. Huge ice blocks slide down the sides of mountains. The cement on the highways rises up into large hills. Cars fall into big holes in the ground. When I'm reading these words, it reminded me of the movie 2012.

  9. I am reading a book about Space by John Farndon. I love all books about space. In the part about Saturn it says that Saturn has winds that are ten times stronger than a hurricane on Earth. That helps me visualize the winds because I have seen hurricanes in Virginia Beach. It also says that Saturn's density is so low that it would float on water. That helps me make a connection because I can picture things floating on water. That means Saturn is really light like a balloon. It is light because it is made of helium. I can visualize Saturn floating like a balloon.

  10. I am reading a book called Amazing Cats by Alezandra Parsons. It is about some cats that live in history. It talks about when the people worshiped cats long, long ago. It also tells me about the 3 different kinds of cats, about their body, fur and special abillties. The cats in this book remind me of my 3 cats and the problems we had when they got stuck up in a tree!

  15. CHester by Melanie Watt. What help me visualize was the sentence that said Chester was a very handsome cat, especially when he wear a pink tutu. The story was about a mouse trying to write a book and a cat that had a red marker and kept writing other things in his book that the mouse didn't like.Thats the book about chester.

  20. Vinny K.
In the book, The Ant Bully by John Nickle, the main character, Lucas was said to have worn funny glasses and a strange hat. Some kids thought he was weird. He was always bullied by a kid named Sid. Lucas then bullied ants by flooding their colonies. I know that there are some kids who think they are too weak to fight back the bullies and they get picked on by others because they are different. I think Lucas is just different and instead of being scared, he should tell the bully to stop picking on him or tell a grown-up. He should be brave enough to do something about it so he would not always feel bad and do the same thing the bully does to him to smaller or weaker creatures.
