Dreaming Big

Reading Response Question for the Week of April 25-April 29
We have read many texts in class, both fictional and biographical, which explore the idea of following a dream. Sometimes in the texts, the characters had to overcome incredible odds in order to achieve something they dreamed. What lesson have you learned from one of these texts, and how will it help you to follow your dreams?

  1. We read the fable, “The Camel Dances” in class. In this fable, Camel practices her dancing and finally shows her friends. When her friends say that she can’t dance, Camel doesn’t believe them. I think this shows that you have to have confidence in what you love doing, even if others don’t always appreciate it. I guess that means that I should keep sending in manuscripts to publishers even if I keep getting rejection letters!

  3. I read the non-fiction book about Martin Luther King Jr. It's about Martin Luther King Jr's dream about having equal rights for all people. I have learned from this book that you should never give up on your dreams because your dreams might come true.

  4. I liked learning about Betsy Ross. She got to make the American Flag. She had to come up with a different flag because we were at war with the British and our flag looked too much like their flag. Betsy Ross had to use her imagination and facts about the colonies to create a new flag. When I grow up, I want to be an architect and design new buildings. One day I hope to create a building that has never been made before so people all over the world will come to see my awesome creation!

  7. In the story, My Brother's Mess, there were two brothers named Tim and Tom. Tim is neat and Tom is not. Every weekend, Tim has to help Tom clean his room, but it's still messy. Then Tim came up with a solution by getting three cardboard boxes and label first box clothes, second, books and games, last trash to help his brother to get organized. Over time, Tom learned how to get things in order and problem solved. If you can help someone, help them.

When the little frogs try to tell the other frogs the story 1 frog trys to puff out its chest to make it look like the oxen's but it burst because it stretched out so far. I think it means not to attemt the impossible.

  20. In class we read a book called "The Ugly Duckling." The Ugly Duckling got treated badly on the way he looked instead of how he treated other people. One day my family and I were on the way to Chick-fil-a. We saw a dirty homeless man on the side of the road. We felt bad for him because we knew that he wanted to be treated like everybody else just like the Ugly Duckling in the story. After we got our food we gave him a gift card and some bottled water. Doing this helped me learn that people should treat others the way they want to be treated.
