What Makes A Person Brave?

Reading Response Question for the Week of March 7- 11
We have read several stories in class lately (Brave Irene, Brave Harriet, and Flight) in which the main characters were described as brave. What does it mean to be brave? What have you or (someone you know) ever done that you would consider brave? Explain what it was and why you think it showed bravery.

  1. I think being brave means that even though you might be scared, you do what needs to be done anyway. One time when my son, Stephen, was two years old, he was playing in his sandbox, and I saw a snake close to him. Even though I am very afraid of snakes, I knew that my son might be injured if I didn’t do something. So I pulled my son away from the sandbox, and then I grabbed a hoe and killed the snake. I think that was brave for me because normally I would never have even considered doing something like that!

  2. I think being brave is when you conquer your fear and do something you probably would've never done. For example when I broke my arm and had to get my cast taken off, I had to conquer my fear and go in there to get it off. I didn't want to because there was a sharp, circular blade that the Dr. said would tickle. I just decided to get it over with even though it didn't really tickle. It mostly hurt. I thought it was brave for me because I didn't want to do it but I did. I was proud of myself afterwards because I conquerd my fear and did something I probably would've never done.

  4. Bravery to me means doing something that you're not afraid of eventhought it meant risking your life. My mom is the bravest person that I've ever known. The reason why I think she's brave because she gave one of her kidney's to her sister, who was ill because of kidney disease. She risked her life to save another, and that to me is brave.

  5. I think brave means that you can face your fears. That is what brave means. There is something that I did which I thought was brave. What I did was I got lost at bush gardens when I was 4 years old and and I wasn't even scared. I was really shy to every one so then I saw my sister Ididn't even yeel out to her I just whisperd to my self. Then I saw a guy that worked at bush gardens but I was to shy to tell him that I need help looking for my parents but I sticked up for my fears and went to that guy and finally fuond my parents (I was super happy). That is something I did that I thought was brave.

  6. I think that being brave is when you do something very adventurous. You usually wouldn't do it because you are scared of it.I think my dad is very brave because he shot a snake right under his best friend. My dog was chasing a snake into my backyard and it got into the backyard. My dad saw it and his friend didn't. So my dad got a gun and shot the snake right next to his friend. He was brave to shoot the snake and to take a risk without hurting his friend.

  7. I think being brave is all about doing something scary that you have never done before. One time I was really brave was when I got my tonsils out that was very very scary. But I rememberd how big they were so I knew I had to do it. That is the time I was really really brave.

  8. I think being brave means you do something event though you scared. It means you have to have courage. I was brave when I was in Kindergarten. My foot was in a cast and the doctor had to cut off the cast and take out my stitches. I was scared it would hurt, but had to be brave. Sometimes I have to be brave to help doctors take care of me.

  9. Brave means trying or doing something that you don't normally do or something that might be scary to you. My Dad is a Fire Marshell, he investigates when peoople call in a bomb threat. He even has to go out at night when it's dark! Sometimes he investigates fires to find clues and catch the suspects. He even has to take the bad guys to jail. I think he is very brave because I would not want to blow up!

  10. I think that bravery means that you do something you normally wouldn't do that might put you in harms way. My grandpa was driving his big log truck and he passed a lady who was pushing a child in a stroller. She moved off the road into the grass so he could pass. When he looked into his rearview mirror he saw her swatting a swarm of bees who must have been nesting in the ground where she walked over. He stopped his log truck, jumped out and went to help the woman and child and took them to the hospital. That showed bravery because he knew he would also get stung by many bees but still stopped to help.

  12. I think to be brave means to do something heroic and something that can be remembered. My mom was brave once when she didn't give away my dog Annie even though she ripped up about
3 fourths of the house. She really wanted to but
she said we needed to be brave and not be afraid of the dog and train her. I am glad we
    still have my dog.

  14. I think being brave is when you are afraid to do something, but you do it anyway because you know you have to. For instance, I was at the Chesapeake Jubilee and there was this ride where you go up 15 feet in the air and you swing around in circles. I was SO scared. I still did it and i did it THREE more times afterwards. THATS what i think of bravery.

  16. I think being brave means to help in times of need. Once, when we were high-sided on a raft trip on a rock I was grabbing important stuff so we wouldn't lose it down the river. I considered that brave because I was calm during this stressful situation.

  17. Brave means when something happens when you don't want it to but you deal with it. Like one time my cousin Samantha was over and Stephen and Samantha were playing on the go cart and I wanted to ride on the motorcycle so my dad helped me get on and so when I started it up it would not go. So I kept revving it and then it zoomed speeding towards the house.I was on the rocks and I slid and fell and cut my knee deeply. It really hurt but I was brave.

  20. I think being brave is when you do something that you would not think you could do. There was a time, in February, when I learned how to snowboard. When I was snowboarding I went in the trick park and did a huge box jump and made it. I think it showed bravery because I did not think I could make the huge jump but I did.

  24. I think brave means to be courageous and bold at the same time. My dad is very brave, because he fights in wars where people shoot at each other and blow up bombs around him. He is courageous in battle, but bold in his belief to protect our country. Now he's even more brave because he is flying airplanes. I want to grow up to be like my dad and be very brave myself. But I don't want to fly airplanes.
