You Try It!

Reading Response Question for the Week of December 6-December 10
We have been talking about how authors often leave clues for us in stories that let us know how the character is feeling or what type of person he/she is. When you write, it’s important to leave clues for your readers as well. Rather than just saying that a character is sad, show your reader by the things your character says, does, or thinks. When your clues are good, it’s easy for us to guess how your character is feeling.
Try it! Think of a character who is feeling a certain way (you may use the paper I gave you that is in your binder for some ideas). Then write a few sentences that “show” us. We’ll see if we can guess! Read my sample to see an example of how to do this!

  1. Susan listened carefully as the names were called out one by one. She could feel her heart racing as she rubbed her hands along the sides of her favorite jeans. Surely Mrs. Lehman would call her name next, wouldn’t she? But what if she didn’t? What if her artwork hadn’t been good enough? Susan shook her head slightly as she looked up and watched the principal, Mr. Davenport, hand out impressive medals to each of the winning students. If only Mrs. Lehman would call her name! How is Susan feeling? (anxious!)

  2. I was standing in line for the rockin roll roller coaster at Hollywood Studios. Everyone around me was talking about how fast the ride started. I was not so sure I wanted to ride it or not. When we got to the front of the line I saw the roller coaster take off. It was fast. My stomach started to hurt. I was thinking about what was going to happen on the roller coaster. I did not want to talk to anyone. I was trying to focus on my stomach. I felt like I was going to pass out. I started to sweat. The lady called me and my mom onto the ride. I had to pull the bar down on my stomach. We took off. OMG. My eyes were closed in the picture we could see at the end of the ride. How was I feeling?

  3. Selena was looking forward to her new baby sister coming home from the hospital. She even helped her dad paint the babys new room. When the baby came home all of her family was there. Everyone wanted to hold the baby and take a picture. Then her grandma came over and walked right past her like she was not even there and wanted to hold the baby and was kissing the baby. Every time Selena wanted to get near the baby she got scolded. She could feel her face getting hot and steamy. She wanted to go run away from everyone. Her palms sweated like tears and her feet curled up like curly french fries. Did they think she was invisible???!!! How is Selena feeling?

  6. Lindsey couldn't sit in her seat. She had a big smile on her face, as her best friend Connor took out a bag that had her name on it. He peeked in the bag and then put it away before Lindsey could see what was in it. Lindsey stopped bouncing, she looked at Connor and said "why can't I see whats in it?" Connor looked at her and said, "Lindsey, it's a present. Why would I let you look. Besides, I'm going to your house anyway. You can see it then." "Fine." said Lindsey. When Lindsey and Connor got home Lindsey said, "What's my present? What's my present? How was Lindsey feeling?

Joe was sweating while his boss was calling out names from a list. If Joe's name was called out he would be surprised. He tried hard at work, but no one seemed to appreciate him. How does Joe feel?

    He feels unnoticed.

  14. Diary of a Wimpy Kid:The Last Straw
Greg had ordered from ads some things that he thought would change his life. The cash machine he got turned out to be a trick that he had to put his OWN money in a secret slot to make it work. It was not good and would not get him out of out of getting a job when he grew up. The x-ray goggles just made him see blurry and cross-eyed. How did Greg feel? I think he was very disappointed because the stuff were not what he thought they would be.

  15. Tony was a young boy who liked to play baseball. Everytime at practice he would let the other kids go first. He always said "nice job" to the kid on base. Tony always took time to congratulate the opposite team even when they lost. Tony will always be remebered for all the nice things he did.

  16. Last year, we went on a family vacation to Smoky Mountain, Tennessee. It was a long 10 hours ride, but it was worth it. Every time when we were traveling up the mountains, my ears would pop. As we were going down, my stomach would drop as if I am riding on a roller coaster. The scenic was amazing! I kept asking, are we there yet? are we there yet?
