Celebrating Our Veterans

Veterans Day was celebrated on November 11. This year, we decided to honor our veterans by telling their stories. We wanted to know what it was like to have served our country. We were curious about training, daily schedules, and friends. We wondered about war. Read the following posts to hear more about our interviews with our Veteran friends.

Sebastian with Terry Tillery, US Marines

Skylar's grandfather, US Navy

  1. My father-in-law, Donald Flinn, served in the Army as a first sergeant from 1950 to 1970. He served in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. He helped to make sure that the supplies got to the soldiers who were fighting. Once, he was injured when a piece of shrapnel from a bomb hit the convoy he was leading. He won a Purple Heart Medal for that. Mr. Flinn said that he made a lot of great friends in the Army, but he was glad to retire.

  3. Today I interviewed my grandpa David, who is "not one for blogs." He was in the Navy. He started when he was 25, which was in the year of 1967 and he retired in 1979 and he was 37. Grandpa joined because it helped him get the education to be the doctor he is now. I learned that the Navy paid for him to go to medical school. He said his best experience was going to San Diego, because of the beautiful weather there.

That is what I got to learn in the interview with Luke Russell.

My Aunt Kelly did not fight on the front lines during the war because she was on the ship. She learned how the US Government worked when she was working in the Intelligence field working with the computers. My Aunt Kelly said they ate the same types of foods on the ship we eat. They ate lots of eggs for breakfast and lots of rice and boiled chicken for dinner. We had to eat healthy.

  8. I interviewed Tim Hall a member of the navy. He joined the military in 1985. He is one of my friends. He got to dive out of a submarine while it was under water. The coolest thing about being in the military is making sure that Americans remain safe. The coolest thing I thought was that he got to infiltrate terrorist camps and set up surveillance cameras.

  10. The person who I interviewed is Harold Wall. He is our family friend, and his branch of service was a cook for the Navy from September 1944 to June1946. I asked him, “What was your favorite mission?” He answered that he sailed on a destroyer in the Atlantic Ocean looking for submarines. The destroyer had 38 guns with 5 inch barrels, 300 men and him all went to Cuba and two more Countries. Then I asked, “Where were you stationed?” He replied that he was stationed on the destroyer the USS Bronson 868, he was a cook on the ship. It was 200 ft. long. Another thing I learned was that Uncle Harold was the first person on the Bronson. He had to jump off a 100 ft. tower into a pool with a wool pea coat on during basic training. They played games at the Navy base, they where ping pong and pool. That’s all I have to tell you about Harold Wall and his service to our Country.
